THE FUTURE OF THE TURKANA COUNTY LIES WITH ENHANCED ICT PROGRAMS, PLANNING CHIEF EKALE SAYS

Lodwar, March 27, 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The County Chief Officer for Economic Planning in the Department of Finance and Economic Planning, Samwuel Ekale has assured interns that the future of the County Government lies with enhanced Information Communication and Technology (ICT) web-based programs that are geared towards improving the service delivery in the county public service.

Ekale said this during the training of the ICT Interns, Attache’s and volunteers stationed in his Planning Department. He says,“ I challenge the trainees to make use of this opportunity to learn government operations, better them and apply for your tomorrow.

For your tomorrow, he said, including the ICT Professionals, you need to be creative and innovate in developing ICT systems that will save on cost of movement submitting reports physically, reduce the paperwork in government departments and eventually go online.”

Similarly, the CCO says, doing that increases productivity in government institutions. The County Government of Turkana, he said, is committed to reducing unemployment through such opportunities and the government endeavors as well to organize more in-house trainings to expose the team to the public service practices.

The training aims at equipping interns with essential skills, familiarize them with the ICT and E-Government, government operations and enhance their effectiveness in Public Service.

The trainees were drawn from Lodwar County Referral Hospital, County Attorney, water services, Trade, County Public Service Board, Health, Urban Areas Management.

Fosia Yusuf, 23, an intern with computer science training, deployed in CPSB, says, “the training is eye-opener and have been privileged to learn how government’s public service works. I would be considering to develop an online system that will support the Board in recruitment process that would save the government a lot of money in advertising, shortlisting and effective in saving time. This way, I would have increased my chances of coming back as an employee to the County Government.”

Equally on the same, Esau Esekon, 24, who has web-development skills attached to Water Department, says,“ as part of the assignment, I need to develop a system that will enhance effective customer feedback, such that it allows water clients to report an issue and get real-time response from Turkana Urban Water and Sanitation Company (TUWASCO) Management.”

Additionally, moving forward, County Director for ICT and E-Government, Isaac Eregae, has challenged the interns with an assignmnet to design programs and computer systems that maximize ICT technologies in departments to create a truly paperless and efficient reporting system, allowing employees in remote areas to send reports securely, instantly, and with better accuracy.

This can help, Eregae said, will solve problems related to insecurities and economical use of government resources in Departments such as Health and Public Administration.

The Deputy Director for ICT and E-Government, Richard Echwa, pointed out to the interns to explore digitally-enabled opportunities and identify their niche in the evolving technology space. By leveraging their skills, he said, they can enhance their competence, stay competitive, and monetize their expertise in an increasingly digital world.

Echwa believed the engagement reinforced the critical role that young professionals play in shaping the future of public service. He looked forward to continued mentorship and discussions on career development, digital skills training, and ethical leadership to empower trainees further.
Together, Deputy Director, reaffirmed, they can build a responsible, competent, and forward-thinking workforce for a better Turkana.

Washington Odoyo (Senior ICT Officer) and brian Kodet (ICT Assistant) were also present in the training.
