The County Directorate of climate change has concluded the inspection of water projects funded by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Change Action (FLLoCCA) in Lokichoggio, Turkana North and Turkana West sub counties.
The joint inspection team was led by Director of Climate Change George Emase and Fr. Joseph Ekomwa, the chair of the board. The team focused on assessing the quality of works and readiness of the boreholes before installation and equipping commenced.
“We are keen to ensure that these boreholes not only functional but also serve our people sustainably,” said Director Emase while addressing community members during a visit to a borehole at Ataekaale’s farm in Lokichoggio.
He added that the next phase would be equipping these boreholes to deliver clean and safe water. This, he said, was an essential step in building community resilience against climate shocks.
Emase also urged local farmers to manage the spread of Prosopis juliflora the invasive species commonly known as “Etirae”, noting its detrimental effects on agriculture. “This plant threatens our arable lands, we need proactive efforts from farmers to clear it where necessary,” he added.
Fr. Ekomwa echoed the Director’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for community vigilance in safeguarding water infrastructure. “These projects are for your benefit. Let us protect them from vandalism and theft. Security and ownership starts with the people,” he said.
Among the boreholes inspected were two in Nakwang’at and Katiaka Ng’alup in Kakuma Ward, one at Lomeguro in Nakalale Ward, and Ataekaale farm in Lokichoggio. The projects are anticipated to significantly ease water scarcity in these arid regions.
“The community in Lomeguro used to walk long distances for water, but now there is hope,” said Lomanat Rajab, a project management committee for Nakalale ward, stating “When the borehole was completed and protected, our community and their livestock will suffer less.” The inspection team included Director of Disaster Management Benedict Mukoo Lochili, and Climate Change Fund Board members Eunice Majuma and William Ejore.
