COUNTY GOVERNMENT PUTS ON NOTICE CAMEL THIEVES, BOOSTS LIVESTOCK WITH DROUGHT-RESISTANT GOATS.

The Turkana County Government has warned criminal networks involved in camel theft across the region. Dr. Gilchrist Lokoel, Chief Officer for Livestock Development, condemned the thefts, revealing that most stolen camels are sold at Loya Market along the Turkana-West Pokot border.

“Rising camel thefts, driven by high market value, have emboldened illegal traders,” said Dr. Lokoel. “This criminal activity threatens pastoralists who depend on camels for survival.” He vowed swift action to end the thefts.

Meanwhile, the county distributed 35 Galla male goats to farmer groups in Kanamkemer, Turkwel, and Katilu. The drought-resistant goats, sourced from West Pokot, will improve local breeds’ quality and market value.

“Cross-breeding will yield hardy, marketable offspring,” said Dr. Lokoel, praising the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) for its support. Veterinary officers will vaccinate livestock this week following recent rains.

Director of Livestock Production Bobby Ewoi Ekadon explained that the Galla breed was specifically chosen for its ability to thrive in arid conditions and improve the quality of local breeds through cross-breeding. He emphasised that this initiative would significantly enhance the market value of livestock within two breeding cycles.

Peace Building Officer with the Danish Refugee Council’s Resilience, Peace and Stability Program, John Ekutan, outlined the objectives of the goat distribution project. He noted that 70% of beneficiaries were women-led groups, reflecting a commitment to supporting the most vulnerable community members. Ekutan added that the goats were sourced from West Pokot County due to their proven adaptation to similar climatic conditions.

The program includes monthly training sessions on modern breeding techniques and animal healthcare, scheduled to run through 2026. Local farmers welcomed the initiative, with Aminatoi Group chair David Ekitela expressing gratitude for the livestock support.

The event was attended by: Farm Manager Oscar Koros, Kanamkemer Area Sub-Chief Beatrice Apetet, Kanamkemer Village Administrator Peter Eregae, and the scheme leadership.
