COUNTY TEAM ASSESSES NASINYONO WATER PAN READINESS FOR USE

Nasinyono – 29th April 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

The County Government, through the Directorates of Climate Change and Irrigation and Land Reclamation, has conducted an inspection to evaluate the readiness of the Nasinyono water pan, in Lokichoggio Sub-county, to support community farms through sustainable irrigation practices.

The water pan in Songot Ward is one of the projects funded under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program. The program aims to build resilience against climate change and ensure food security across the country.

Speaking at the site, the Deputy Director of Climate Change, Thomas Kiyonga, urged the Irrigation and Land Reclamation technical team to uproot the invasive Prosopis juliflora around the water pan’s edge.

“Let’s ensure that the emerging Prosopis juliflora at the periphery of the water pan is completely uprooted, as it degrades the entire water body,” Kiyonga said.

Once completed, the water pan will improve access to irrigation water for local farms through a generator-powered pumping system, enhancing agricultural productivity in the area.

The Irrigation and Land Reclamation technical team, led by Engineer Samwel Oloo, appraised the progress of the project against the specifications outlined in the Bill of Quantities (BQ). This was to ensure that the construction meets quality standards and delivers the intended benefits to the community.

Climate Officer Philemon Ekadeli explained that the project complies with environmental and social safeguards. It, he added, has minimal ecological impact and ensures sustainability through community acceptance.

Meanwhile, a community elder from Nasinyono, Lorot Lomor, appreciated the county team’s efforts, stating that the water pan will help their farms access water for food production.

Also present were the Director of Irrigation and Land Reclamation – Richard Lokoyan, the Director of Administration – Sammy Karo, Member of County Assembly for Songot Ward – Bethwel Kobong’in and other county officers.
