GOVERNMENT MOVES TO STOP UNLICENSED MINING IN KAINUK

The County Department of Mining has raised the alarm over increasing illegal mining cases in Kainuk, Turkana South, during a courtesy call to the County Commissioner’s office.

The visit, led by County Executive (CECM) for Tourism, Culture, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Leah Audan Lokale, aimed to seek the County Commissioner’s support in tackling unauthorised mining activities that have sparked concern among residents and local officials.

“Our mission is to ensure sustainable mining practices and safeguard the county’s natural resources,” said CECM Lokale. She urged the County Commissioner to take immediate action against unlicensed mining operations in the area.

Chief Officer for Mining, Triza Amoni, highlighted recent reports indicating a surge in unauthorised extractions, posing threats to both the environment and community safety. In response, the County Commissioner Julius Kavita acknowledged the gravity of the situation and called for stronger collaboration between county departments and local authorities.

He directed the Assistant County Commissioner stationed in Kainuk to take immediate steps to halt illegal operations in Kainuk. He also requested the County Department of Mining to conduct an urgent inspection of the site.

Others present during the call included Director of Mining Merimug Eloto Nickson and other county mining officials.
