GOVERNOR LOMORUKAI MEETS TASKFORCE ON HUMAN ORIGINS MUSEUM PROJECT

Lodwar, 15 May 2025 (Governor’s Press Service)– Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai today held talks with members of the Presidential Taskforce on the proposed Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park.

The project aims to establish a world-class centre for scientific research, cultural tourism, and eco-tourism. It will build on major discoveries in the region, including the Turkana Boy and the world’s oldest stone tools, which have placed Kenya on the global map as the cradle of humankind.

Governor Lomorukai said research on Turkana as the origin of mankind should be well documented. He pledged the County Government’s full support and asked the Taskforce to work closely with the Department of Culture, the Council of Elders, and local communities.

“We are ready to work with the national government to make this project a success,” said the Governor.

Richard Barno, who led the team, said the project seeks to transform the region by tapping into its rich heritage. He noted that the Lake Turkana Basin holds many important fossil sites that can support Kenya’s claim as the birthplace of human beings.

He added that the government plans to build a global museum of human origins, which will attract investment and boost tourism in Turkana and the wider Ateker region.

The Taskforce is chaired by General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces. Its mandate includes mapping heritage sites, compiling a database of artefacts, and preparing a comprehensive investment plan. It will also carry out a feasibility study and consult widely with stakeholders.

The Taskforce will spend 14 days in Turkana engaging the County Government, the public, and local leaders. It has pledged to share its findings with the Governor before its report is officially presented to President William Ruto.

County Executive for Trade, Youth and Tourism Roseline Aite welcomed the initiative. She said the museum would open up Turkana to tourism and bring major economic benefits to the county.

Senior County officials present during the meeting included Acting County Secretary Joseph Nyang’a, County Attorney Ruth Emanikor, and County Executive for Lands Faith Aletea.

Also in attendance were Chief Officers Peter Lomorukai (Lands) and Cicilia Majuma (Tourism), along with Advisors Amb. Dr. Richard Ekai (Economic), Ekiru Tulele (Legal), and Phoebe Kaaman (Culture), as well as a host of County Directors.
