With the USAID funded Imarisha Jamii Program coming to an end in 2026 the Department of Health and Sanitation and a team from AMREF Health Africa met to discuss the transition of the program’s activities.

The purpose of this meeting was to review progress and discuss transition measures for sustainability of all the involved activities.

The program has made impact in Turkana through increasing the use of quality county-led health and social services. This is by focusing on HIV; Family Planning, Reproductive, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (FP/RMNCAH); Nutrition; and Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) program.

Sarah Akiru, Deputy Director of Policy Planning, M&E and Partnership Coordination mentioned the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing key gaps by leveraging county structures and mobilizing resources to increase healthcare services.

“County government actively monitors the programs performance and uses data to inform decisions about service delivery, especially to do with HIV/AIDS, family planning and nutrition,” she added.

According to the Chief of Party at AMREF Health Africa (Imarisha Jamii), Dr Evans Osembo, they met with the County Government to tackle the very important issue on sustainability and transition processes of the USAID funded activities around HIV, TB and family health.

“It is important for us to discuss the sustainability agenda with technical teams from both sides on how we can sustain the gains that have been achieved through USAID funding,” he said.

Emphasis was put on capacity building the Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and other local healthcare workers to effectively continue the Imarisha Jamii program activities. This includes training on data collection and service delivery.

Dr Osembo added that this will ensure there are no losses in case there is a funding fluctuation.

The Chief of Party also highlighted long-term sustainability of the program beyond the USAID Imarisha Jamii project will involve exploring different funding sources and developing a business case for ongoing support.

Present were County Health Mangement Team and representative from AMREF Health Africa.
