County in strategic partnership to enhance livestock value chains

The Turkana County has developed strategic partnership with Strengthening Peace, Resilience and Disaster reduction (SPREAD) Project to enhance livestock value chains in range management, pasture production cross border livestock trade, among others.

The Deputy Director of Livestock Production, Josephine Emase, in a meeting with the officials of the Project said they were exploring ways of strengthening collaboration and partnerships and engage in assessment of livestock markets, renovation of sale yards and support to community rangeland management committees.

The Project is implemented by Danish Church Aid (DCA) Kenya and SaferWorld in partnership with a consortium of Turkana Pastoralists Development Organization (TUPADO) and Agency for Cross Border Pastoralist Development (APAD) with funding from European Union (EU).

As a three-year project (2024-2027), building resilience in cross-border communities of the Karamoja Cluster, is implemented in Kenya (Turkana County), South Sudan (Eastern Equatoria), and Ethiopia (South Omo).

In Turkana, the Project is implemented in Kibish, Turkana North and Lokichoggio.

The project seeks to enhance the effectiveness of conflict prevention and mitigation, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), and management and resilience-building in cross-border communities in the border region of the Karamoja Cluster by January 2027.

During the meeting, Emase stated the significance of the project saying it builds the capacity of the communities on value chains,“the project will help in building the capacity of local community and groups to promote localized and inclusive initiatives that improve livestock production and productivity.”

The Assistant Director of Livestock Production Ernest Anzeze emphasized on the importance of improving the capacity for cross-border communities on rangeland management, pasture production, livestock marketing, disaster risk mitigation and response.

The Project Coordinator of SPREAD Irene Kibon, reaffirmed the project’s commitment to working with the County Government to develop the livestock value chains for the period of the project.

Present in the meeting were David Kangole (Head of Programmes, TUPADO) and Festus Lokwawi (Project officer, TUPADO).
