The County Department of Energy has installed streetlights in Kalobeyei, Turkana West, as part of its ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and support local economic growth.

The project, which involves the installation of solar-powered streetlights, is aimed at enhancing security, extending business hours, and improving the overall quality of life for residents in the area.

According to Alice Ajore, a businesswoman at Kalobeyei Centre, the new streetlights had made a significant difference in the community. “We are now able to operate our businesses at night and crime has reduced significantly. Life has become better for many of us,” she said.

County Engineer Samwel Lobei said the initiative reflects the county’s commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment.

“Supporting our communities requires a multifaceted approach—one that not only addresses immediate infrastructure needs but also promotes long-term social and economic integration,” he said.

He added the streetlights, powered by solar energy, represent more than just a source of illumination. They, he said, stood as a symbol of resilience and progress for the residents of Kalobeyei—lighting the pathway toward a safer and more vibrant future.

Among the inspection team were Senior Energy Officer Karemugu Ronald, Senior Energy Accountant Robert Arumu,Jackson Emanman, a representative from the department’s procurement unit.
