GOVERNOR LOMORUKAI CALLS FOR COORDINATED GROWTH IN KAKUMA MUNICIPALITY

Lodwar, 19th June 2025 (Governor’s Press Service) – Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has called for stronger partnerships and coordinated development approaches to address the complex challenges facing residents of Kakuma and its surrounding areas.

Speaking during a KISEDP Joint Secretariat Meeting, the Governor emphasised that the multifaceted nature of issues in Turkana demands multipronged solutions.

While lauding the Kenya Integrated Settlement Development Programme (KISEDP) for its significant contributions in meeting critical needs, Governor Lomorukai urged development partners to support the growth of Kakuma Municipality as a key urban centre in Turkana.

He expressed appreciation for the milestones achieved under KISEDP but emphasised the need for deeper collaboration, especially in enhancing infrastructure.

The Governor challenged partners to strictly adhere to the local content law, ensuring that Turkana residents, especially youth and women, benefit from business and job opportunities.

Addressing the proposed Shirika Plan, Governor Lomorukai cautioned that integration must be systematic and informed by a clear, inclusive model. “Integration needs to be organised, guided by a clear model,” he said, noting that poorly planned initiatives risk undermining sustainability.

In a move to streamline development coordination, the Governor requested comprehensive data on all development partners currently operating in the county.

Sateesh Nanduri, Head of the UNHCR Sub-Office in Kakuma, expressed gratitude to the County Government for its continued support of KISEDP and emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration in resource mobilisation and program delivery.

Mike Aupe, Deputy Director for Resource Mobilisation, pledged to compile a detailed report and enhance inter-agency coordination through the County Steering Group (CSG) to be convened soon, which the Governor co-chairs with the County Commissioner.

Senior County officials present were Directors Rafael Logum(Resource Mobilisation), Dr. Ekiru Kidalio (Medical Services), Peter Lomauge (Protocol), and Nanok Aaron (Agriculture).

Governor’s Advisor on Partnerships and Gender Festus Imuton, Benjamin Tukei (Lodwar Municipality Manager) and Halima Duba (Kakuma Deputy Municipality Manager) also accompanied the Governor.

Also present were Godfrey Ikone Akolong (Director, Public Health Services-KISEDP) and Gladys Arika (Director, Clinical Services-KISEDP).

Later, the Governor Chaired a Cabinet meeting.
