Department of Health continues crackdown to improve service delivery

In a bid to continues improvement in service delivery, the County Health Management Team (CHMT) met to review supervision reports, status of health facilities, consumption and safety of essential health commodities.

The Chief Officer of Medical Services, Dr Gilchrist Lokoel reiterated the need to enforce adherence to standard operating procedures and holding staff accountable for safety of medical supplies and non-pharmaceutical products.

“We need to enforce a crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical activities such as licensing as well as scrutinize the consumption rate of food and medical products in all our health centers and facilities,” he said.

The team shared preliminary findings from the last round of impromptu supervision in Lokichar and Katilu Sub-County Hospitals as well as Elelea, and Nabulon Health Centres.

Chief Lokoel challenged the senior human resource officers to follow up and take action against absenteeism of critical health staff. He also touched on fast-tracking service delivery, utilisation of equipment, and refurbishment of health infrastructure.

With regards to the ongoing disease outbreaks, Dr Lokoel called on the senior health team to maximize on the ongoing integrated strategic response towards eliminating Kal Azar, Malaria, Cholera, and Measles.

He directed an urgent follow-up on the status of the cold chain system and assured that the county is set to bolster facilities along the border points to contain potential transmission along the borders.

“Currently, we are in the process of procuring cold chain systems targeted for facilities along the border entry points in addition to the ongoing role out of the Vacciboxes set for Sub-Counties. This will strengthen our upcoming immunization campaign for Measles-Rubella and Typhoid Conjugate Vaccines,” he explained.

He encouraged the team to keep daily, brief reports on the current outbreaks affecting the communities in Turkana.

Present were directors and deputy directors in the Directorate of Medical Services.
