The County Government through the Directorate of Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Resources is calling residents of Turkana to embrace the utilization of clean energy solutions for domestic use and operation of small-scale businesses to save on cost and improve livelihoods.
Speaking at an exhibition cum workshop organized by dealers of clean energy products, Chief Officer Triza Amoni said the County had created an enabling environment to improve access to solar powered technologies for cooking, lighting and other household uses.
“We are working with all players in the sector through a partnership program to strengthen supply and distribution of such innovations and products through market led models,” CCO Amoni explained.
She urged residents to transition from use of firewood at household level and instead use the readily available cooking stoves powered by solar already in the market through vendors.
“These products are not only clean, but affordable in the long run. Turkana is really blessed with abundant solar energy which makes the products cheaper and easy to use,” she said.
Coming at a time when the county is preparing Energy Policy to guide the partnership between Government and all sector players, the market-based approaches are expected to boost the availability of clean energy solutions throughout the region inhabited by both the local communities and refugee population.
