The County Steering Group (CSG) has approved three more development and humanitarian programs expected to benefit thousands of vulnerable households and communities across Turkana.
At a sitting in Lodwar, where the implementing organizations made detailed presentations, the green light was given to GiveDirectly to focus on cash transfer, Save the Children for Nutrition and Child Protection response, and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) for anticipatory action programming.
The acting Co-chair of the session and the Deputy County Commissioner for Turkana Central Thomas Siele confirmed that the proposals were in line with the County’s need to address challenges posed by climate change and extreme poverty situations currently witnessed in Turkana.
“These programs are well thought out, our work as both the national and county government is to create an enabling environment for their implementation,” DCC Siele explained.
Mike Aupe, Deputy Director for Partnerships and donor coordination, added that the approvals were a result of coordinated planning. He urged more implementing organizations to follow the same route by making use of technical working groups corresponding to their interventions.
“By presenting at the CSG, we are able to guard against duplication of efforts and over saturation in some area given that the county has more than 100 development partners implementing programs across the region,” he said.
Echoing this, Moses Nawoton, Deputy Director for Disaster Risk Management and CSG co-chair emphasised that the forum provided real platform for aligning interventions with real needs on the ground.
The approval process was equally lauded by Dr Philemon Onga’o who said that the new approach of interrogating programs encouraged shift from basic sustenance to more sustainable models for the residents.
Kenya Red Cross Society, International Rescue Committee, National Drought Management Authority, ADRA Kenya and line departments of the national and county governments representatives attended the forum.
