The County Government, in partnership with the Water Resources Authority (WRA) and LOKADO, is set to launch a digital platform, Water Asset Inventory to monitor water supply infrastructure through a centralized dashboard.
The product was validated by the partners at a meeting in Kakuma where roll out and eventual scale-up of the platform to cover the entire water supply systems was discussed.
According to Director of Water Services Paul Lotum, the platform will be introduced in stages over the coming years.
“This is part of digital transformation in the water sector, and it perfectly aligns with the departments goal of improving supply system and quick response to breakdowns,” Director Lotum said.
He added that the Water Asset Inventory platform will link boreholes, water pans, main and subsurface dams, with the County Government continuing to seek partnerships to enhance the its functionality.
Samson Rotich, Head of the WRA Turkana office noted that the product had also been designed to strengthen routine information gathering, support decision making based on data collected and anticipate changes in the water levels over time.
LOKADO’s, Willis Ekai lauded the product as a milestone towards utilization of technology solutions to transform water supply systems.
Addressing concerns over potential challenges such as information overload, power outages and network failure, the validation team committed to collaborate in ensuring that the challenges do not hinder the intervention.
As part of the products roll-out, the Department of Water will conduct a month-long assessment of more than 100 water supply infrastructures across the county prior to installation.
Representatives from TURWASCO, KALWASCO, Welthungerhilfe among others were present.
