In efforts to formalize artisanal mining in Turkana County, the Department of Cooperatives has officially registered the Nagetei Artisanal Miners Cooperative Society Limited, granting it legal recognition and opening new pathways for growth and support.

The registration was marked by the issuance of a certificate and a democratic election that saw members vote in new leadership to steer the cooperative’s agenda.

Moving forward, the cooperative is expected to bring structure, transparency, and development prospects to the informal mining sector in the area.

Speaking during the handover of the registration certificate, James Akorot, a senior cooperatives officer, lauded the miners for organizing themselves into a legal entity.

“This registration empowers the cooperative to operate within the law, access funding opportunities, and build meaningful partnerships that will uplift local livelihoods,” Akorot said. “We encourage members to remain united, focused, and accountable.”

Phillip Ekitoe Kaaman, who was elected as the inaugural Chairperson of the cooperative expressed commitment to responsible leadership and stakeholder engagement.

“I am honored to take up this responsibility, our immediate focus is to establish efficient operational systems and begin engaging with partners to ensure our members benefit from safer and more sustainable mining practices,” Ekitoe stated.

Local miner and member of cooperative, Leah Kapelo welcomed the move, describing the cooperative as a game-changer.

“Previously, we worked in isolation and faced many challenges,” she said. “With the cooperative, we now have a collective voice, improved access to markets, and a platform to advocate for better working conditions.”

This new cooperative society aligns with County Government’s broader efforts to formalize artisanal mining and enhance community incomes through structured cooperatives.
