The County Government has partnered with Seed Savers Network to establish Turkana’s first community seed bank in Lokwii, Turkana East Sub-County.
This pioneering initiative aims to conserve climate-resilient seeds for sustainable food production in the region.
During an extension visit to Elelea, Lokubae, and Morulem irrigation schemes, Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation David Maraka introduced the Seed Savers Network team to local farmers.
“This collaboration addresses our commitment to resolving food security challenges through agricultural innovation,”
Maraka stated, announcing immediate support of 300 maize bags for farmers while canal infrastructure improvements progress. Director of Agriculture Aaron Nanok confirmed similar seed production projects are already operational in Turkwel.
“We’re commercialising agriculture by training lead farmers in modern technologies like seed banking systems,” Nanok explained.
Seed Savers Network Programme Officer Dalma Mitei assessed irrigation scheme capacities, confirming: “Seed bank development will commence shortly to preserve local seed diversity.”
Farmers welcomed the initiative, with Lokubae Irrigation Scheme Chairperson Hosea Lotiir noting: “Community seed banks will safeguard our agricultural heritage.”
Elelea Irrigation Scheme Chairperson Josphat Lokai urged urgent action on canal siltation reducing water flow to farms. The visit was attended by Katilia MCA Alphonse Loteder and Sub-County Crop Officer James Apuyo.
