County, UNICEF set to roll out life skills project for marginalized learners

Lodwar – 30th July, 2025

The County Directorate of Education, in partnership with UNICEF Kenya, is set to launch the “Children on the Margin, Life skills and Values” Project, an initiative targeting young learners in 80 schools across the county.

The project aims to empower children particularly those in vulnerable and border areas with essential life skills for personal development and social resilience.

County Executive Committee Member (CEC) for Education, Leah Audan, emphasized the need for a holistic strategy in implementing the project especially in schools along the borders as they often exposed to insecurity and displacement.

“This life skills project should prioritize children from migrating families and those experiencing psychological trauma. By empowering them, we’re promoting education and expanding access to children as agents of change,” she stated.

UNICEF Chief of Lodwar Zonal Office, Rotuno Kipsang noted that the project aligns with the Presidential Taskforce on Education’s focus on value-based education, community engagement and parental involvement and will be rolled out at the Early Childhood Development (ECD) to Junior Secondary levels.

UNICEF’s Education officer, Margaret Njayakio, also emphasized that the project will go beyond the classroom by actively involving parents, caregivers, and Boards of Management to nurture life skills both at home and in school. This, she added, will ensure learners are fully empowered to become agents of change.

Also present at the meeting were Director David Omakada and Deputy Director Alice Ejem both expressing support for the initiative and its far-reaching potential.

The project will be officially launch on 6th August, 2025.
