GOVERNOR LOMORUKAI COMMENDS KOICA, UNICEF FOR IMPROVED WATER AND HYGIENE ACCESS

Lodwar, 28th August 2025 (Governor’s Press Service) — Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai hailed KOICA’s long-standing partnership, acknowledging the Korean Government’s support through numerous initiatives in the water sector.

He said this while meeting officials from UNICEF AND KOICA. He emphasised that their efforts are aligned with Agenda No. 1 of his administration: ensuring access to clean water for all.

“While support from KOICA has been pivotal, we need concerted efforts to tackle water scarcity and eliminate open defecation. Community involvement is crucial for sustainability,” he said.

The Governor called for fairness in the distribution of project benefits, particularly between host communities and refugees, and urged the expansion of programs to include livestock-rearing areas, which are a lifeline for many Turkana residents.

Ms. Hwayeong Bae, Deputy Country Director of KOICA Kenya, shared the results of the now-concluded Score 1 Project, which reached over 176,000 people in 900 villages, transforming lives across Turkana. She announced a new plan aimed at benefiting 50,000 more people, with a bold target of improving sanitation in 600 villages.

“These projects can only be sustained with a strong commitment from the County Government. We commend Governor Lomorukai for prioritising water services and pushing for the strengthening of water utilities, including the establishment of new water towers,” she said.

UNICEF’s Chief of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Kenya, Mr. Haile Gashaw, announced that the second phase of interventions will focus on Turkana North and Kibish.

He highlighted complementary programs in nutrition, education, and child protection, including positive parenting initiatives targeting the Turkana East and South regions. UNICEF also continues to support policy development for social protection, ensuring that gains in health and sanitation are long-lasting.

County Secretary Dr. Amb. lauded KOICA’s support for critical sectors.

County Executive for Public Service, Patrick Losike, pledged the department’s full involvement in service delivery and public sensitisation.

Director for Water Services, Paul Lotum, highlighted ongoing efforts to drill and rehabilitate boreholes, which are key to reducing the distances residents must walk in search of water. Acting Director of Public Health, Ismail Ekaran, praised KOICA and UNICEF for their instrumental roles in reducing open defecation, a major step toward healthier communities
