The Strengthening County Resilience Against WASH-related Climate Crisis (SCORE II) project has disseminated its preliminary baseline survey findings to guide customized water and sanitation interventions in five Turkana sub-counties.
The findings were presented during a project update meeting attended by county water and health officers, alongside representatives from UNICEF Kenya, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Kenya Office and various partners.
The survey collected initial data to establish a clear understanding of the current situation on water access and sanitation. A total of 870 households, 27 schools, 350 water points, and 10 health facilities were sampled across the five sub-counties.
Director of Water Services, Paul Lotum, noted that the survey findings required further analysis to reflect the actual situation on the ground.
“The Directorate is committed to collaborating with all SCORE II actors to ensure that it achieves the desired results, as was realized in SCORE I,” he said.
He highlighted that the project’s goals include improving water access, sanitation, and governance; to ultimately achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Six which focuses on ensuring clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.
According to the 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey, 42% of households in Turkana County have access to basic water services, while 68% have access to basic sanitation services.
SCORE II, a Sh900 million project funded by KOICA and implemented by UNICEF Kenya, aims to rehabilitate and upgrade 38 boreholes, drill three boreholes in Kibish, and target 620 villages for community-led total sanitation activities to end open defecation. The project is scheduled to conclude in June 2027.
KOICA Deputy Country Representative in Kenya, Jooyoung Baek, assured participants that the organization would continue to support the project, emphasizing stronger collaboration and partnerships.
In his remarks, UNICEF Chief of the Lodwar Zonal Office, Rotuno Kipsang, said the survey findings would be consolidated to guide project implementation.
Other partners represented included the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Water Resources Authority, Team and Team International, the Diocese of Lodwar, and Welthungerhilfe Kenya.
