Community Land Rights and the Application of Alternative Justice Systems (AJS) in Community Land Governance held a three-day workshop that brought together government officials, community leaders, legal experts, and development partners.
The forum, organized by FAO under the EU-FAO Digital Land Governance Program (DGLP) in partnership with the Islamic Foundation for Integrated Programs (IFIP), and the Turkana County Government, provided a platform to address challenges and opportunities in land governance.
The workshop provided a platform to reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing land governance in Turkana. Participants engaged in discussions on Kenya’s judicial system and the role of AJS, examined the Community Land Act 2016, and explored the process of community land registration. Practical sessions included mediation skills, dispute resolution practices, and role-play exercises demonstrating how AJS can be applied in handling land conflicts.
FAO Representative Linda Achieng reaffirmed FAO’s support in strengthening land governance through legislation and urged AJS officers to deepen their understanding of the Community Land Act.
Chief Officer For Municipalities and Urban areas Management Peter Lomurkai highlighted progress made under KUSP and KISIP programs, which have supported the registration of 45 community land units.
Closing the workshop Chief Officer For Lands Leah Losiru stressed that the sustainability of AJS is critical and must be embraced as a shared responsibility by both the community and the County Government of Turkana.
She further urged AJS members to be good ambassadors of Alternative Justice Systems in their communities and called on all land stakeholders to embrace inclusivity as a guiding principle in governance.
The workshop concluded with a strong commitment from all participants to promote AJS as a culturally sensitive, inclusive, and accessible pathway to justice, essential for securing community land rights and fostering sustainable peace and development in Turkana County.
In attendance were Representatives from National Land Commission, State Department of Lands , County Commissioners , and County Attorney’s office.
