The County Technical Vocational and Education Training Department, in partnership with the Ujuzi Mashinani programme by Nawiri, has visited satelite vocational centres in Kanaodon and Kagitankori, where cohorts of trainees are gaining hands-on skills to improve their lives and communities.

These cohorts are part of the Ujuzi Mashinani initiative in Katilu and Kalapata, a collaboration between Nawiri and the County Department of Vocational Training designed to equip youth with marketable skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Chief Officer for Sports and Vocational Training, Robert Loyelei, hailed the programme for opening doors to learners of all educational levels.

He said group-based training equips trainees to start businesses, tap opportunities, and stay resilient.

The county, he added, will back them by bringing training centres closer and tailoring schedules to community needs.

Nawiri’s Alternative livelihoods and markets officer, Salim Imoni, said that Ujuzi Mashinani is more than technical training.

“The programme is about mindset change. It calls for commitment to learning, and its long-term goal is to eradicate malnutrition through stronger, self-reliant households,” he explained.

He also added that the programme integrates business skills and enterprise registration to ensure graduates are ready to operate sustainably in the market.

Deputy Director of Vocational Training, Jeremiah Loyapan, urged learners to go beyond training and turn their knowledge into enterprises.

“These skills must be applied to create businesses and livelihoods,” he emphasized after interacting with students on their progress, challenges, and training needs.

Jackline Liwan, a student in hair dressing expressed delight for enrolling in Ujuzi mashinani.

“This programme has helped us so much, but we need more time to cover additional courses.” She said

Her colleague, Ruth Akutan, appealed for start-up equipment to put their skills into practice.

Nawiri has provided start-up tools for these centres, comprising, hairdressing, plumbing, masonry, mechanical and electrical equipment.

Enrollment in Kalapata and Katilu Wards has been encouraging, with over 500 students pursuing mechanics, hairdressing, electricals, plumbing and masonry each determined to turn their training into meaningful careers.
