Trade sector working group advocates for inclusive growth and market linkages

‎The County Government, through the Department of Trade, Weights and Measures, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises (MSEs) by working closely with the Trade Sector Working Group.

‎The platform brings together the government, private sector, NGOs, and community representatives to streamline enterprise development, expand market access, and align local businesses with national policies and funding opportunities.

‎The Trade Sector Working Group plays a key role in coordinating efforts to formalize MSEs, reduce duplication of development initiatives, and promote best practices across the trade sector. This is done through fostering stronger market linkages and enhancing data-driven decision-making. It seeks to unlock new opportunities for small traders and entrepreneurs.

‎At a recent forum held in Lodwar, stakeholders emphasized the groups importance in bridging trade policy gaps, supporting market assessments, and tackling barriers to enterprise growth.

The discussions also explored new partnerships while addressing persistent challenges such as restrictive policies and limited financing.

‎The Chief Officer for Trade, Pauline Tang’arae, assured participants of the government’s full support, underscoring collaboration as key to unlocking the sector’s potential.

The Trade Director Winnie Lopush described the Working Group as a vital tool for harmonizing development activities and sustaining long-term impact.

‎The meeting also spotlighted grassroots initiatives such as the Girl Power Action Initiative, which reflects the growing role of women and youth in business. The program aligns with the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Plan (KISEDP), which sets out eight pillars for inclusive growth in Turkana.

‎The Working Group highlighted the importance of mechanisms like the Disputes Resolution Committee in addressing emerging trade challenges.

‎Representatives from the Department of Trade, Markets and Cooperatives outlined their broader mandate, which includes regulation, licensing, aggregation centers, and financing support through the Biashara Fund and Youth Development Fund. The Weights and Measures Department was also recognized for its role in safeguarding fair trade practices and quality standards.

‎The forum concluded with a strong call to strengthen the sustainability of the Trade Sector Working Group so it can continue serving as a bridge between policy, partnerships, and grassroots enterprise development.
