The County Departments of Trade and Public Works have carried out a joint inspection of the ongoing construction of 35 new stalls under Phase Three of the California Market project in Lodwar town.
The inspection, led by senior officials from the two departments, assessed the pace and quality of the works aimed at boosting business opportunities by providing a conducive trading environment for local entrepreneurs.
County Director of Public Works, Ignatius Kopeto, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring high quality infrastructure for traders.
“Our focus is on delivering durable stalls that meet safety and usability standards. The contractor has been tasked to complete the works within the set timelines without compromising on quality,” Kapeto said.
Deputy Director for Trade, Wilson Ejie, noted that the expansion would significantly ease congestion and improve business conditions at the busy market.
“The additional stalls will provide much needed space for traders, especially women and youth, who have been operating in crowded and sometimes unhygienic conditions. This is a big step in supporting livelihoods,” Ejie said.
Public Works Engineer, Amos Ekalale, gave assurances that the construction is progressing as scheduled.
“We are on course with the construction works, and the project is currently at 60 percent completion. Our team is closely monitoring every stage to ensure specifications are adhered to,” he explained.
On behalf of the traders, California Market Chairperson Samson Lokai described the development as timely and impactful.
“We are grateful to the County Government for listening to our pleas. Once complete, these stalls will transform business by giving traders proper structures to operate from,” the chairperson stated.
The California Market serves as a key economic hub for hundreds of traders. The Phase Three project is part of the County’s wider initiative to modernize markets and strengthen trade infrastructure in Turkana.
Also present at inspection were Johnmark Eregae (Structural Engineer), Samwel Ekeno (Senior Trade officer).
