Turkana County hosts carbon market development forum

The Department of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, in collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT through the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project, Verst Carbon, and Forum CIV, held a joint workshop to strengthen the informed participation of Turkana stakeholders in carbon market development.

The workshop brought together experts from national policy institutions, the private sector, civil society, and the scientific community. This forum is a key step in enhancing sustainable climate action and enhanced local resilience.

In his opening remarks, the Chief Officer for Environment and Climate Change, Joseph Emoni Ekalale, reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to collaborative climate solutions.

“This training is designed to enhance our individual skills, strengthen teamwork, and align our efforts with the organization’s mission of excellence and service. It also reinforces our shared commitment to partnership ,working together across sectors and disciplines to deliver a climate-smart future that ensures sustainability and resilience for generations to come,” he said.

He encouraged all participants to engage actively in exchanging knowledge and building partnerships that will strengthen Turkana’s capacity to respond effectively to the challenges of climate change.

Charles Waweru, Director of carbon projects at Verst Carbon introduced participants to the concept of carbon markets, explaining how they provide opportunities for communities and organizations to earn revenue by reducing or removing greenhouse gas emissions.

He also noted that “Through verified carbon credits, counties like Turkana can attract climate finance, support ecosystem restoration, and promote sustainable livelihoods, while contributing to Kenya’s broader climate goals,”

George Emase, Director of Climate Change, presented ongoing and completed climate-related projects and activities within the county, highlighting successful local initiatives that demonstrate Turkana’s commitment to building climate resilience.

The workshop is significant in positioning the county as a leader in climate-smart development and carbon market readiness, advancing the County’s vision for a sustainable and resilient future.

Present were representatives from the Directorates of Environment and Climate Change and sub-county administrators from Turkana West, East, South, and North.
