Lodwar, November 8, 2025 (Governor’s Press Service)

More than 20 women’s, youth, self-help, and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) groups from Turkana Central have benefitted from Governor Dr. Jeremiah Lomorukai’s empowerment drive, conducted through a series of fundraising initiatives in Kerio and Kanamkemer wards over the past three days.

Speaking during the Jackcity fundraiser at Kanamkemer School, Governor Lomorukai said the initiative aligns with his administration’s goal of empowering local groups to participate meaningfully in economic growth.

“This fundraiser, as I mentioned earlier in Nayuu, is one of the ways we are empowering women, youth, and vulnerable groups.

The County Government has also rolled out various development projects to support livelihoods,” he stated.

The Kanamkemer event brought together 24 groups representing different areas of the ward, from Nawaitorong to Jackcity. Each group contributed Ksh 10,000, raising a total of Ksh 240,000.

In total, over Ksh 2 million was raised, with leaders commending the initiative as a testament to the Governor’s commitment to grassroots empowerment.

Kanamkemer Ward MCA James Ikeny encouraged the groups to transition from Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) to Saccos for greater profitability.

“We are working with the Governor to sensitize groups on available opportunities through joining Saccos,” said Ikeny.

Earlier, the Governor attended the launch of Save the Pastoralists Kenya (STP), a new organization dedicated to improving the livelihoods of pastoral communities and protecting rangelands from encroachment.

Governor Lomorukai was named the organization’s patron.“I’m pleased to see organizations like STP emerge. Turkana’s population largely depends on pastoralism, and such initiatives will attract partnerships to uplift pastoral livelihoods,” he said.

The Governor was accompanied by MCAs David Ekod (Kerio) and Linet Abok (Nominated), Chief Officer Dominic Emase, county staff, and representatives from the business community. The empowerment drive has so far reached over 200 groups across Turkana.
