The County Government, international Labor Organization (ILO) PROSPECTS, and other partners including Powerlearn, Global Careers Africa, and Bingwa Handyman Services met to initiate plans for an expanded digital skills initiative across Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) and ICT hubs in the County.
The program aims to transform VTCs and ICT centres into dynamic hubs offering high-quality, market-driven digital training for both host and refugee communities.
The Chief Officer for Sports and Vocational training, Robert Loyelei applauded ILO’s continued support in strengthening the county’s vocational training centres.
He highlighted the Department’s ongoing efforts to support VTCs in gaining accreditation in digital skills and through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework.
He also noted the continued initiatives to equip trainers, digitise course delivery, and roll out the new digital Job Search Club model in VTCs.
ILO PROSPECTS Coordinator Stephen Mwangi outlined initiatives positioning VTCs as future-ready digital training hubs, including virtual tech programs run with partners like Powerlearn and careerbox to build global job readiness.
Ross Stewart of Global Careers Africa emphasized shifting global labour trends and expressed interest in linking county-trained youth to international digital and tech-support opportunities.
Powerlearn Project Coordinator, Mumbi Ndungu reported that over 20,000 youth in marginalized counties have been trained through their digital programs, supporting efforts to develop job-ready tech talent with VTCs, while ILO’s Youth Employment Specialist Jonas Bausch reaffirmed their commitment to building strong, inclusive digital-skills pipelines aligned with labour-market needs.
Njihia Njoroge, founder of Bingwa Handyman Services, stressed the importance of training that connects directly to market opportunities and shared progress on a platform supporting RPL recognition for skilled workers.
Deputy Directors Jeremy Loyapan (County Vocational Training) and Richard Echwa (County ICT) confirmed that the county’s eight VTCs and seven ICT centres are ready to integrate into the growing digital training ecosystem.
County ICT Officers Nancy Tatoi and Kelvin Gitonga were also in attendance.
