With less than two weeks to the International Day for Persons with Disabilities celebrations in Turkana County, eight-year-old Kulal Ekadeli from Lochwa Village in Turkana South now has a paediatric wheelchair that will greatly improve his mobility. Kulal lives with a physical disability caused by cerebral palsy from birth.
His uncle and guardian, Ekadeli Alfred, says the device will help the young boy move freely and begin developing independence at an early age.
As part of ongoing preparations for the upcoming International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the Rehabilitative Services Programme under the Directorate of Medical Services will be on-site, providing a range of health services. These will include disability medical assessments for persons with disabilities ahead of their digital registration by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD).
The County Coordinator for Rehabilitative Services, Concepta Long’ole, is calling on the public to visit the assessment desk during the event.
“We encourage everyone with a disability who does not have a registration certificate to come on that day for assessment,” she said.
The Chief Officer Medical Services, Dr Gilchrist Lokoel highlighted that the team will apply the new disability medical assessment guidelines, which cover a wide range of disabilities, including physical, visual, hearing and speech, mental, intellectual, and broad-spectrum developmental disorders.
This, he said, is part and parcel of ensuring inclusivity and disability mainstreaming in the County Government agenda.
