Multi-agency visit Turkana for Food Systems Resilience learning

Lodwar – November 25, 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

A multi-agency team of officers from the World Bank, National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and the State Department of Social Protection has begun a four-day tour of Turkana to learn from World Food Programme (WFP) interventions on economic inclusion of communities experiencing the impacts of climate change.

In his address while hosting the team during a courtesy visit to his office, Turkana County Secretary Dr Richard Ekai called for stronger efforts to enhance community production systems as the county shifts from aid to food sustainability.

He noted that Turkana remains the best endowed ASAL county in terms of water availability and arable land, and challenged the visiting partners to explore opportunities for infrastructure development that could unlock this potential.

Dr Ekai further urged the team to align their work with the County Government’s Nine-Point Agenda, describing it as an inclusive and comprehensive blueprint for designing effective interventions.

Earlier, Head of WFP Lodwar Office Sarah Ayodi explained that the learning mission was organised to draw lessons through interactions with beneficiaries of the Climate Resilient Food Systems Hub.

“Over the four-day period, we will visit installations put up by beneficiaries of Vijana in Kilimobiz. We will also visit Kakuma, Katilu and Kalokol where we have programs under the Climate Resilient Food Systems Hubs,” she said.

Chief Officers David Maraka (Agriculture), Joseph Ekalale (Environment and Climate Change), Dr Ezekiel Etelej (Livestock Development) and Simon Etom (Water Services) were part of the county team that hosted the visitors.
