Turkana’s Energy solutions and markets under review

Lodwar – November 26, 2025 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

The Department for Energy and Petroleum has held discussions with the SNV – Netherlands Development Organisation to expand access to sustainable energy solutions and strengthen local energy markets in Turkana.

Speaking during the engagement, the Director for Energy and Petroleum, Jackson Lojore, said the meeting was timely, noting that Turkana still faces significant gaps in access to affordable and reliable energy.

“We continue to grapple with low electrification levels, high dependence on biomass, and limited clean cooking solutions,” he said. “Addressing these challenges will not only improve household welfare but also stimulate growth for small and medium enterprises and boost service delivery in social institutions.”

Lojore added that the county is prioritising off-grid electrification, clean cooking and heating technologies, biodigesters, and productive-use energy interventions. “Improved energy access will enhance livelihoods, reduce pressure on the environment, and open economic opportunities for our communities,” he added.

SNV’s Advisor for Humanitarian Energy Access, Kiprono Shadrack, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting county efforts to build a more inclusive and sustainable energy market.

“Our objective for the energy sector is to support the development of inclusive markets for sustainable energy, contributing to more equitable livelihoods for all,” he said.

Kiprono noted that SNV is currently conducting studies to develop a scope that will inform future programmes, with plans to extend activities beyond Turkana West and explore additional sectors such as water, trade, and climate change.

The Deputy Director for Energy, Geofrey Eregae, underscored the importance of economic participation and social inclusion, emphasising that youth, women, and vulnerable groups must be positioned to benefit from emerging opportunities within the energy sector, especially as new markets and technologies develop.

“Efforts are geared towards increasing the uptake of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency,” Eregae added.

The discussions are expected to deepen collaboration, particularly in programmes that expand market-based clean energy solutions across Turkana, setting the stage for a structured partnership aimed at reducing energy poverty and accelerating green development in the county.

The meeting was also attended by SNV officials James Githuku (MEL Advisor) and Etoot James (Consultant, SNV Kakuma).
