Lodwar Municipality has announced that tree planting activity will be an annual event at this year’s event where more than 400 trees were planted across four institutions.
The greening initiative is part of the World Bank–funded Kenya Urban Support Programme Phase II (KUSP II)
The exercise, led by Chief Officer for Urban Areas Management Peter Lomorukai and Lodwar Municipality Manager Benjamin Tukei, began at the Lodwar Fire Station before teams were deployed to Lodwar Technical College, Turkana University, and the Kenya Medical Training College.
Chief Officer Lomorukai said the municipality would work closely with residents to ensure the trees are nurtured to maturity.
He noted that a similar tree-planting activity had recently been conducted in Loima Sub-county, adding that Lodwar’s rapid urban expansion must be accompanied by deliberate environmental protection measures.
Municipality Manager Tukei revealed that the municipality is developing a plan to operationalize recreational parks by expanding green spaces.
“Even though the municipality lies in an ASAL region like most parts of Turkana, routine tree planting can help create green spaces. For this reason, this exercise will be an annual activity,” he said.
Municipality board members, students, county and national government staff, and members of the public participated in the exercise.
