County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening initiatives that advance the collective aspirations of the Ateker pastoralist communities living across the borderlands of Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia.
Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus said Turkana had already identified several flagship projects—including Kimormor, the cultural peace festival, and the establishment of a shared livestock laboratory—as key interventions that will contribute to a united and peaceful Ateker nation.
“Every time we plan Kimormor, the One Health initiative, our plans accommodate Ateker pastoralist communities from the county and beyond. It is our way of serving the entire population. We will continue with this approach moving forward,” Dr. Erus stated.
He spoke during the opening of a three-day consultative meeting that will lead to the establishment and launch of the Ateker Leaders Council in Lodwar.
The Deputy Governor also lauded the appointment of former Cabinet Secretary Hon. John Munyes as the Special Envoy for Peace in the Ateker region, noting that the national government had provided an enabling framework for strengthening intra-Ateker relations.
“The appointment of Hon. John Munyes builds on the infrastructure for peace that Tirkana began putting in place through the Catholic Justice and Peace Mission long before devolution,” he said.
The meeting brought together dignitaries led by Cabinet Secretary for East Africa, Regional Development and ASALs, Beatrice Askul, alongside Members of Parliament, County officials representatives from regional governments, local leaders and peace-building organisations.
