County, KEFRI train Municipality staff on climate smart town planning

Lokichar, December 8th 2025 (Public Communications and Media Relations)

Turkana County Government, through the Department of Urban Areas Management, in partnership with the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI), concluded a two-day training in Lokichar focused on strengthening climate change adaptation, green enterprise development, and sustainable livelihoods across emerging municipalities.

Chief Officer Peter Lomurukai emphasized the urgent need for climate-smart interventions in the municipalities, highlighting opportunities in smart agriculture, value addition, and green jobs. He also noted progress on key bills such as the County Financial Bill and Urban Areas Bill, which will enhance governance and financing for municipalities like Lodwar.

The County investment in technical expertise and strong partnerships—with NEEMA, Kenya Forest Service, and KEFRI—was recognized as central to driving urban climate resilience.

KEFRI’s Patrick Mwenja reported successful support for local green enterprises including Pelekech Environmental Groups, Turkana West Charcoal Producers Association, Songot Community Forest Association, and Rafiki wa Mazingira. These initiatives continue to improve livelihoods, promote environmental stewardship, and support urban growth.

Lodwar Municipality Manager Benjamin Tukei underscored the role of municipalities in climate action through improved waste management, permit enforcement, street cleaning, low-carbon pathways, and efficient water use.

Special Elect MCA Hon. Mary Nakabwan called for deeper community participation in climate adaptation efforts, especially in oil-producing areas like Lokichar.

Committee members and partners recommended the establishment of a green belt to enhance urban greening, mitigate climate risks, and support long-term sustainability.

The engagement reaffirmed the County Government’s commitment to building climate-resilient municipalities and empowering communities through practical, inclusive, and sustainable adaptation strategies.
