Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has announced that the County Government has rolled out an emergency relief response targeting 77,000 households experiencing food stress across the county.
In the exercise set to end in January, the County Government will distribute,3850 metric tonnes of maize and 194 metric tonnes of cooking oil to affected households.
Dr. Lomorukai spoke today when he led the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Lokirama Peace Accord Commemoration centre in Lokiriama Sub-county. He revealed that the priority areas targeted first in relief food distribution include hardest-hit wards such as Nanam, Lokichoggio and Song’ot in Lokichoggio Sub-County; Kibish, Lakezone and Lapur in Turkana North; Kalapata in Turkana South; and Kerio Ward in Turkana Central.
Dr. Lomorukai who was accompanied by First Lady Lilian Ekamais added that the county has integrated Social Health Authority (SHA) registration into the relief distribution process, in a bid to address the county’s low registration levels.
He lauded President Museveni’s government for collaboration and hospitality for pastoralist communities in Ateker region. He assured residents that his administration will continue working with all stakeholders to strengthen peace building and conflict resolution.
Dr. Lomorukai said that he was working with more than 40 Members of the County Assembly who were focused on issues affecting the electorate over personal political gains.
Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus called on residents to support the Government, reaffirming its firm commitment to ongoing development initiatives.
County Commissioner Julius Kavita dismissed claims by some leaders that lives had been lost due to hunger, assuring the public that the County had actually received increased supplies of relief food from the National Government.
County Assembly Speaker Charles Lokiyoto noted that significant progress in peacebuilding had been achieved thanks to close collaboration between leaders in Kenya and neighbouring countries.
Ateker Peace Envoy John Munyes appealed for unity among the Ateker communities.
He emphasised that addressing the region’s recurring challenges especially drought depends on peaceful coexistence.
Principal Advisor in Uganda’s Office of the President Dr. David Pulkol revealed that a draft Resource Sharing Agreement covering grazing areas, water points, and other shared natural resources between Ugandan and Turkana pastoralists has been completed and is now awaiting approval from both the Kenyan and Ugandan authorities.
Senior County Government officials in attendance included County Secretary Dr. Richard Ekai; Deputy County Secretaries Joseph Nyang’a and Dr. Albert Gamoe; and County Executive Members Dr. Michael Eregae (Agriculture), Roseline Aite (Finance), and James Wangiros (Tourism).
