Turkana commemorated World Wetlands Day 2026 at Napuu Primary School, bringing together county officials, national government agencies, community members and learners to highlight the importance of wetlands conservation.
The commemoration was held under the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” which emphasized the critical role of indigenous knowledge and cultural practices in the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands. Participants noted that local communities have, over generations, safeguarded wetlands through traditional customs that promote harmony between people and the natural environment.
The Guest Speaker, Edward Wawire of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), emphasized the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern conservation approaches to ensure the long-term protection of wetlands for future generations.
William Mbotela, the acting Deputy Director for Environment ,reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to wetlands conservation through enhanced public awareness, strengthened partnerships, and community based approaches.
He further expressed appreciation to all partners who supported the event, including LOKADO, Kenya Red Cross Society, NEMA, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and the Water Resources Authority (WRA).
