County Government has led public engagement exercise at various venues in Turkana West and Turkana North on a request of an investor seeking to venture in mining in the areas.
Led by Chief Officer for Mining Triza Amoni and the Director, Eloto Merimug, the representatives of the prospective investor with interests in gold and other precious stones Wajadon Enterprise Limited were also introduced to the residents.
Addressing residents at Lochor Angierengo in Turkana West and Nakitoekakon villages in Turkana North, Triza Amoni said that the public engagement was a legal requirement in a Government dispensation where community involvement was valued.
“Even as we want to grow the mining sector in Turkana, community voices remain central. Such public engagements are meant to provide a platform for sharing concerns,”
Noting that the dominating concern was on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) alongside issues of environmental protection, safety, economic empowerment and inclusion, Chief officer said that measures would be put on place to ensure that the concerns are fully Intergrated in the investor entry process.
“I also wish to take this opportunity to encourage communities to turn up in large numbers whenever such public engagements are called. Together with officials from various state departments, the county aims to promote sustainable benefits from the mining sector to the people,” she added.
Anthony Ekomwa, the youth chairman, welcomed the investor’s interest, noting that the community was hopeful to benefit from the project. He emphasized the need for the investor to support improvement of local health facilities and create employment opportunities for the youth, adding that such initiatives would go a long way in uplifting livelihoods within the area.
