DG Erus lead ground breaking for 2 bed theatre

Kakuma Mission Hospital, Turkanas’ longest existing Faith Based health facility, is expanding it’s current theatre into a two bed unit.

Deputy Governor Dr John Erus assisted Catholic Diocese of Lodwar Rt. Rev John Mbinda in groundbreaking ceremony alongside Grand Chancellor H.E Ricardo Paterno and Ambassador Dr. Wilhelm von Trott zu Solz of the Soverign Order of Malta.

The exercise was attended by the Diocesan Health Coordinator, Diocesan Chancellor, the caritas Director, Dr. Joseph Epem CEC health and health officials alongside the Malteser International (MI) Delegates and the MI Country Director Manuel, among others.

The upgrade will enhance the hospital’s capacity to handle more surgical cases simultaneously reducing patient waiting time and improving emergency response particularly for cases arising from the populous Kakuma Refugee camp, Kalobeyei settlement schemes and the host communities.

In his address, Dr. John Erus said that the Catholic Diocese had proven proven itself as a good steward having grown the facility from a food distribution point back in 1963 to it’s current level four status with offering variety of services.

“As a County, we appreciate the working partnership with Diocese on matters health provision and acknowledges support from Order of Malta throght the Malteser International,” Dr. Erus said.

On his part, Bishop John Mbinda of the Diocese of Lodwar expressed hope that the completion of the two-bed theatre will improve efficiency in maternal health, taruna care and general surgical procedures hence boosting the hospital’s role as a key referral facility in Turkana. The Sub County Security team led by Area DCC Oboche attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
