The County Government has received 18 new water projects from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) as a major boost in water access for communities.
This follows an official handover of water infrastructure to the county to be managed through Turkana Rural Water and Sanitation Company (TURWASCO).
Led by Wily Justus Lopeyok, County Executive for Water Services, he reaffirmed the county’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with development actors in the Water Sector.
Speaking during the handover event, CECM noted that the Water Services Department will continue to work closely with all the stakeholders to enhance access to clean and safe drinking water.
He emphasized that collaboration remains key to addressing water scarcity challenges in remote and underserved areas.
On the other hand, Eng. Vincent Lokeya, who headed the IRC team during the handover ceremony, urged the water scheme committees to take full ownership of the facilities and ensure proper management and maintenance to guarantee sustainability.
As he led the official transfer process, he emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and community participation in safeguarding the projects, noting that the success of the water facilities will largely depend on the commitment of local management structures.
He reaffirmed IRC’s dedication to supporting improved water access in Turkana and encouraged continued collaboration between communities, the county government, and development partners to strengthen service delivery.
