The pastoralists in Kakuma have benefited from the ongoing targeted vaccination and supportive treatment, following the partnership between the County Government of Turkana and Turkana Pastoralist Development Organization (TUPADO) in Turkana West.
Speaking at Lochor-ang’iereng’o, when he visited the veterinary team involved in vaccination, Dr Erenius Nakadio, Deputy Director of Veterinary Services urged veterinary officers to attend to all the animals in Kakuma Ward for them to reach the target of 25000 animals.
“At the end of a 10-day exercise, we expect 25,000 goats and sheep would have been vaccinated, mainly against a highly contagious Peste des Petitis Ruminants (PPR),” stated Nakadio.
TUPADOs intervention, he said, is part of the ongoing County Government drought response efforts with partners, which has seen Concern Worldwide implement similar activities in Turkana North and Central Sub-counties.
Additionally, Nakadio informed that the County Government and TUPADO, are building capacity of Community Disease Reporters (CDRs) to report livestock disease outbreaks, and promoting resilience programs for food security in Turkana West and Lokichoggio.
The Programme Manager for TUPADO, David Kangole, who accompanied Dr Nakadio to the field, expressed his confidence working with the county government that has seen over 113000 small ruminants vaccinated since June 2024 up to date.
TUPADO, he noted, will also enhance timely pre-positioning of emergency response interventions such as livestock vaccination and supportive treatment in the ongoing drought response.
“The ongoing intervention, has reported over 9000 goats and sheep vaccinated in the last five days of the campaign,” said Kangole.
He said, the response was informed by reports from the CDRs and local leaders, reporting livestock diseases especially on helminthiasis and suspected PPR in Turkana West.
Moving forward, he noted, TUPADO will continue supporting the county to monitor the livestock diseases, during this rainy season as livestock are returning from the cross border corridors of Uganda, Sudan and Ethiopia that might increase suspicion of disease prevalence in the county due to transboundary animals disease outbreaks.
TUPADO is implementing Pathways to Prosperity (P2P) Project in partnership with Danish Refugee Council (DRC) and Dan Church Aid (DCA). P2P is a multi-year project funded by Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and Grunfos Foundation.
