Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers and Ward Education Officers from Turkana North, Lokichoggio, and Turkana West, including those serving refugee communities, have undergone an intensive training programme aimed at enhancing the delivery of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum and strengthening digital literacy.
The latest training builds on earlier capacity-building sessions conducted for ECDE teachers in Turkana South, Turkana East, Loima, and Turkana Central, bringing the total number of ECDE teachers trained to 102, alongside 29 Ward Education Officers, marking a sustained countywide effort to strengthen teacher proficiency while equipping educators with modern, learner-centered teaching skills.
Participants were taken through contemporary teaching approaches aligned with the CBE curriculum, with particular emphasis on continuous assessment. Trainers underscored that effective assessment enables teachers to develop a comprehensive picture of learners’ abilities.
The training further explored pre-primary assessment methods, equipping educators with tools to ensure consistency and effectiveness in curriculum delivery across learning levels. Teachers said the sessions had significantly sharpened their instructional techniques.
“The training helped sharpen our skills and provided a clear framework to ensure consistency in our teaching methods,” noted one participant.
Digital literacy formed a central pillar of the programme, with teachers introduced to integrating technology into classroom instruction. This is expected to enhance learner engagement and prepare pupils for an increasingly digital world, in line with the goals of the CBE curriculum.
The ongoing rollout of teacher training across Turkana County by UNICEF reflects a deliberate strategy to harmonize teaching practices and ensure educators are fully equipped to deliver the CBE curriculum, while strengthening the foundation of learning across the county.
