The Department of Energy and Petroleum plans to scale up green energy initiatives across the county following the successful rollout of solar-powered pilot projects funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Implemented in partnership with Practical Action, the projects aim to improve access to clean and reliable energy in underserved communities.
The planned expansion follows a joint monitoring visit by delegations from IOM, Practical Action and the County Government, who conducted spot checks on completed pilot projects to assess their impact and viability ahead of expanding the initiative to other parts of the county.
County Executive Committee Member for Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr Anthony Apalia, commended the initiative, noting its potential to transform livelihoods.
“The global shift toward green energy is key to driving sustainability in underserved areas of Turkana. This initiative will enhance service delivery and strengthen socio-economic resilience,” he said.
Apalia added that the county government is working closely with development partners to diversify energy sources, with a particular focus on marginalized communities.
County Chief Officer for Energy and Mining, Triza Amoni, emphasized the importance of establishing an enabling policy framework, noting that the proposed energy bill and policy will help streamline operations in the sector.
She added that the creation of a county energy database has improved coordination and promoted inclusivity in the planning and implementation of energy projects.
Amoni also called on private sector players and humanitarian agencies to invest in the county’s energy sector to accelerate access in both refugee and host communities.
IOM Deputy Chief of Mission, Sharif Faisal, highlighted the broader role of energy in driving development, including its application in waste management through recycling, where waste can be converted into usable energy.
Faisal noted that the interventions also focus on improving water access, especially in remote areas where reliable power is critical for water supply systems, as well as supporting agriculture through irrigation technologies such as drip irrigation.
Director of Energy, Jackson Lojore, underscored the need to integrate energy solutions across sectors to spur economic growth.
“We acknowledge the role of our partners in unlocking the county’s potential through sustained energy support,” he said.
The meeting was also attended by Deputy Director of Energy, Geoffrey Eregae.
