Lodwar – March 27, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)
Over 1,000 traders operating in Lodwar have graduated from a six-month business skills training programme offered through a partnership between the County Government and Inkomoko.
Deputy Governor Dr John Erus presided over the ceremony, praising the initiative for empowering residents to actively contribute to the local economy.
“This is a classic example of the power of partnerships in boosting the capacity of local traders to improve their businesses and contribute to economic growth,” said Dr Erus.
He noted that the Inkomoko-led training benefited both host communities and refugees, commending the organisation for providing affordable loans to support business start-up and expansion.
“The repayment rate of up to 98 per cent is commendable and demonstrates that small-scale traders in Turkana are bankable,” he added.
The Deputy Governor also urged beneficiaries of the Biashara Fund to repay their loans.
“The County Government remains concerned that a majority of beneficiaries have yet to repay loans disbursed under the Biashara Fund. Kindly repay or reach out in case of any challenges,” he said.
Teresia Wakahia of Inkomoko described the training as a comprehensive programme integrating business skills development, market linkages, and the strengthening of business networks.
Grace Jesse, one of the graduands, said the training had enhanced her business management skills, enabling her to maintain accurate financial records and access loans for expansion.
Representatives from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Danish Church Aid (DCA) also attended the graduation ceremony.
A total of 1,098 graduands operate across various value chains, engaging in small-scale, retail, and wholesale businesses.
