Community Opposes Proposed Airbase Land Allocation in Kangatotha

Kangatotha, April 2026 (Governor’s Press Service) — Residents of Kangatotha have voiced strong opposition to the proposed allocation of community land for the establishment of a Kenya Air Force forward operating base, citing concerns over lack of consultation and fears of displacement.

The concerns were raised during a public participation forum attended by a multi-agency team from the National Government, comprising the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Lands Commission, and other stakeholders. The team is in Turkana to gather public views on the proposed project.

Earlier, Governor Dr. Jeremiah Lomorukai hosted the delegation for a courtesy call before leading them to Kangatotha for the engagement with residents. The Governor emphasised that land in Turkana is community-owned and any acquisition must be guided by the consent of the people.

He acknowledged growing concerns among residents that land earmarked for the project had been taken without adequate consultation. The Governor cautioned that land matters are highly emotive and risk being politicised, clarifying that the County leadership had not sold any land to the Kenya Defence Forces.

Governor Lomorukai further noted that the choice of land proposed for the project may have been miscalculated and urged the national team to listen to community concerns and consider alternative locations.

While expressing support for strategic national projects, he pointed to other potentially viable options for consideration.

Leading the national delegation, Brigadier (Rtd) Faustine Sirera said the initiative is part of a broader national development agenda driven by the President to unlock Turkana’s potential. He explained that the Defence Strategic Plan had identified Turkana as a key location for infrastructure that can serve both security and development purposes.

Brigadier Sirera noted that the proposed facility would go beyond a military installation to include critical infrastructure such as an airstrip capable of supporting defence operations, including aircraft refuelling, while also contributing to regional development.

He assured residents that the government’s intention is not to impose the project but to engage communities and incorporate their views into a framework agreement. He added that if approved, the project could catalyse the growth of a new urban centre, similar to other towns that have developed around military installations.

The delegation reiterated its commitment to continued consultations with elders and stakeholders to ensure informed decision-making.Senior county officials present included Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus and County Secretary Dr. Richard Ekai.

Kangatotha MCA Mathew Alany led a team of Members of the County Assembly in accompanying the Governor.
