Kakuma – April 10, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

Families in Turkana West can now access dignified, reliable, and affordable mortuary services closer to home following the operationalisation of the Kakuma Sub-County Hospital morgue.

Equipped with two freezer units with a capacity of 12 bodies at a time, the facility has been fully operational for the past month now, offering 24-hour services under optimal hygiene standards. The unit is supported by four trained morticians, ensuring professional and respectful handling at all times.

The County Government is also actively working to further boost its capacity.

Beyond the morgue where post moterm services will soon be available, the hospital continues to strengthen healthcare delivery with other key services including a dental unit, X-ray, ultrasound services, and a fully fitted theatre set to be operationalised in under two months, bringing comprehensive care closer to the people.

This restored service is expected to ease the burden on bereaved families, significantly reducing the distance traveled and associated costs during such difficult times.

The County Executive Committee Member for Health and Sanitation Services, Dr. Esekon Joseph Epem, highlighted the commitment as a County Government is to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services across Turkana.

“This morgue is part of a broader effort to strengthen health systems and support our communities in every moment, including times of loss,” he added.

Speaking during the hospital supervision, the Chief Officer for Medical Services, Dr. Gilchrist Lokoel said said he is pleased by the progress made, “The facility meets the required standards, and we will continue to invest in expanding its capacity to serve our people better,”

“The operationalisation of this morgue marks a major step in restoring essential health services in Turkana West. We are bringing dignity and convenience closer to the community,”
said John Ngasike, Medical Officer of Health, Turkana West.
