The County Government has launched the African Agriculture Adaptation Atlas (AAAA), a new initiative aimed at strengthening climate-resilient agricultural planning.

The project, implemented by the Sustainable Agriculture Foundation (SAF) seeks to provide essential geospatial data analysis to support informed decision-making in the agricultural sector.

The initiative was introduced during a workshop facilitated by the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD).

The workshop focused on equipping county officials with the tools necessary for effective agricultural planning in the face of climate change.

The Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation, David Maraka, acknowledged RCMRD team for their technical assistance in developing the County Government’s agriculture enterprise factsheet, a tool designed to deliver real-time agricultural data. This is crucial for making informed decisions and directing investment in adaptation strategies.

“The AAAA offers innovative technologies that we can adopt and tailor to our local context,” Maraka stated. “These resources will enhance our decision-making processes, improve performance reviews, and ultimately enhance service delivery to the people of Turkana,”

Maraka emphasised that the geospatial tools provided through the initiative will help identify climate-related risks, thereby improving productivity and strengthening resilience across key agricultural value chains in the region.

Aaron Nanok, the Director for Agriculture, guided participants through the practical applications of the knowledge products.

He highlighted the importance of reviewing datasets and developing an action plan to ensure ongoing knowledge generation, foster strategic partnerships, and integrate the atlas into the county’s spatial planning efforts.

The move, marks a significant step towards enhancing the agricultural sector’s resilience in the County, addressing the challenges posed by climate change and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Josephine Emase (Deputy Director, Livestock production), John Bett (County Aquaculture Officer), Angela Too and Connel Cheptumo from the RCMRD were present.
