Residents of Loturtur and Lore Amatet in Kerio Ward, are set to benefit from improved access to clean and safe drinking water following significant progress in the implementation of the Loturtur Rural Water Supply Project under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP).

During an inspection tour of the ongoing civil works, project stakeholders confirmed that the project has reached an advanced stage, with the remaining civil works expected to be complete within the next three months.

The inspection team comprised of Managing Director of Turkana Rural Water and Sanitation Company (TURWASCO), Ekaran Samuel, representatives from CAS Consultants, and members of the Sub-Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), including Procurement Specialist Albert Korikel and Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist Paul Kotome.

Speaking during the inspection exercise, the County Project Coordinator (CPC), Charles Ekeno said the project remains a key investment aimed at addressing water scarcity challenges in the area and improving livelihoods of the local communities.

“The progress of works is encouraging, and we are optimistic that the project will be completed within the scheduled timelines. Once complete, the scheme will provide reliable access to clean, piped and portable water to the communities of Loturtur and Loree Matet,” CPC said.

Ekeno further noted that the project is expected to benefit 10,000 people and will reduce the long distances residents travel in search of water.

This, he said, will also improve sanitation and public health standards in the area.

During the visit, officials confirmed that the contractor had delivered the base reservoir tank, for installation.

The project team also inspected the hot-dipped galvanised plates for the tank to ensure they meet the required quality standards.

“This inspection is important because we want to ensure that all materials being installed meet the approved specifications and standards for durability and safety,” the Coordinator said.

The residents expressed optimism that the initiative will enhance access to essential water services and support socio-economic development in Kerio Ward.
