The County Government in partnership with the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has today launched the second round of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) campaign. This is set to begin in Kakuma and Kalobeyei ahead of the June–October Malaria transmission season. Through the CRS’ Child Health and WASH programme.
In a courtesy call to the Deputy Governor’s office, the team led by Margaret Kahiga, the CRS Country Manager said they will use the WHO-recommended approach to protect children during the peak transmission period.
Dr. Edwin Mbugua, CRS Program Manager for Health said SMC has run successfully in Turkana Central for the last two years and is now expanding to Kakuma and Kalobeyei.
He also noted that while the plan is to eventually cover the whole county, this campaign targets over 132,000 children. “The malaria prevention drugs have been received through support from the United States,”
The Deputy Governor, Dr. John Erus stressed on coordination and evidence-based decisions for the good of the public health.
“Turkana County remains committed to boosting child-health, and welcomes research-guided policies to ensure equitable service delivery for both refugee and host communities until no child is left behind,” he added.
Present were Deputy County Secretaries Dr. Albert Gamoe and Joseph Nyanga, Mike Aupe (Deputy Director, Resource Mobilization and Partnerships), Peterson Erus (Assistant Director, Administration Office of the Governor).
Other CRS representatives included Alfred Ireri (Head of Office Turkana), Branice Kisali, and Margaret Kariga.
