Turkana strengthens Ebola preparedness through frontline health worker training

The County Government has kicked off a four-day, county-wide training for 70 frontline workers on Ebola preparedness and response as part of continued efforts to strengthen the capacity against the potential outbreak.

The training is equipping healthcare workers with critical competencies in early detection, screening, triage, isolation, case notification, and infection prevention and control measures to reduce the risk of transmission within health facilities and communities.

Participants are also receiving practical instruction on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, waste management, and safe patient handling procedures.

The capacity-building activity brings together healthcare workers from referral hospitals, sub-county hospitals, and health facilities at points of entry across the county.

Through simulations and practical exercises, participants are enhancing their ability to promptly identify, report, and respond to suspected Ebola cases while safeguarding patients, colleagues, and the wider community.

According to Daniel Esimit, Director of Preventive and Promotive Health, preparedness begins with a well-trained health workforce.

“By strengthening the skills of our frontline healthcare workers in infection prevention and control, early detection, and emergency response, we are enhancing our capacity to protect communities and contain any potential threat before it escalates,” he said.

The training comes against the backdrop of the continued Ebola outbreak in neighbouring countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, and the persistent cross-border movement of people between Uganda and Kenya, which places Turkana and other border counties at heightened risk.

County health authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining vigilance, continued surveillance and implementing proactive measures to safeguard public health.
