County, National Mining officials assess fatal Nakunoit pit collapse

The Department of Mining, in collaboration with the National State Department for Mining, visited the Nakunoit Mining Site in Loima Sub-county following a tragic pit collapse that occurred on 3rd June 2026.

The incident claimed the lives of two miners, while one survivor sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment. The survivor was initially attended to at Namoruputh Health Facility and is scheduled for specialized care.

During the visit, Director for Mining Merimug Eloto and Director in the State Department of Mining, Job Onyanja assessed the situation, engaged local leaders and community members, and monitored ongoing recovery efforts for trapped bodies underground.

Rescue operations have been hampered by repeated pit wall collapses, necessitating the deployment of an excavator to support the safe retrieval of bodies still trapped underground.

The team emphasized commitment to strengthening safety measures at artisanal mining sites to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Present were Mining Inspector Christopher Odhiambo and Chairman of Artisanal Miners in Turkana, Micklam Eregae.

The County Government extends its condolences to the bereaved families wity health officers working to ensure speedy recovery for the injured miner.

Both the County and National Mining Departments reaffirmed their commitment to promoting safe and responsible mining practices across Turkana County.
