Kakuma Municipality to get first fire station at Nakoyo under World Bank program

Kakuma – June 10, 2026 (Public Communication and Media Relations)

Kakuma Municipality is about to build its first fire station to serve both host and refugee communities. The Municipality officials have identified a site at Nakoyo village for the project.

Municipality Manager Eng. Benjamin Tukei led a County Government and UN-Habitat team to inspect the proposed site. The incoming station will be funded under the second phase of the World Bank’s Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP II) as parr of the 2025-2026 financial year budget.

“The fire station will give the Municipality the capacity to respond to fire outbreaks and emergencies locally, instead of relying on Lodwar,” Tukei said.

At present, Kakuma depends on the only fire engine and staff stationed more than 120 kilometres away in Lodwar, delaying response times, yet a recent assessment by the County Fire Unit indicated that the densely populated Municipality was very vulnerable to fire outbreaks.

Nakoyo Land Committee Chair David Lojore, welcomed the project noting, residents expect better access to electricity and other social amenities that come along with such a facility.

“As residents of Nakoyo, we will work with the Municipality and UN-Habitat to see this project through. We know it will bring power and other services that come with such an investment,” Lojore said.

Lojore added that the station should be able to serve the entire Turkana West including Lokichoggio, Nanam and Letea.

David Kitenge from UN Habitat said the agency would continue partnering with the Municipality to deliver key infrastructure.

“We remain committed to working closely with the Municipality to ensure priority projects are implemented,” Kitenge said.

Present were members of the County Fire Unit, Turkana West Land Administrator Simon Lokakwan, Nakoyo Sub-Location Assistant Chief James Ekomwa, village administrator Jalton Aita, and community members.
