The Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HOAGW4RP) will this month deploy 20 new interns to enhance water governance and sustainability in all the sub-counties countywide.
This move comes after HOAGW4RP has concluded a two-day interview exercise for internship positions aimed at intensifying efforts of improving water access and availability.
The internship programme seeks to equip young professionals with practical skills in water systems operation and maintenance, enabling them to support various schemes in their respective sub-counties and eventually take over responsibilities after contractors complete their assignments.
The interviews, held on from June 8 to June 9, 2026, brought together 60 shortlisted candidates; 44 male and 16 female were drawn from Turkana North, South, East, West, Central and Loima sub-counties.
The candidates were selected from a pool of 172 applicants following a shortlisting exercise conducted between May 18 and 19 2026.
Speaking at the start of the interviews, Paul Lotum, Director of Water Services, encouraged candidates to approach the exercise with confidence and composure.
“This interview is an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and commitment to serving your communities. Be confident, and approach it to the best of your ability,” said Lotum.
He noted internship programme is a critical component of ensuring sustainable water service delivery in Turkana.
“We are investing in local talent. Water Companies require capable personnel who understand the needs and can sustain the systems long after completed works,” he added.
Successful candidates will be attached to water utilities within their home sub-counties, where they will work alongside contractors for a period of six months.
The interns are expected to gain hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of water infrastructure before assuming greater responsibilities in supporting the schemes.
